DWU Tea Party

"A Saturday Tea in March"
to celebrate Women's History Month

Birth of an Idea!
At our 2003 DWU Board Retreat in Orlando, Florida, members of the DWU Board came up with the idea of having our own Signature event, the DWU Tea Party! We wanted something of our own that would be identified with DWU, just like Pink Ribbons are associated with Breast Cancer Awareness and Red Hats are worn by members of the Red Hat Society that honors women ages 55 and up. We felt that hosting a tea party with lots of Deaf Women having tea together is the perfect combination to showcase what DWU means: friendship, sharing, and unity!

Inaugration by the DWU Board
The first tea parties were held in the hometowns of DWU board members in November, 2003. Those inaugural parties took place in Austin, Texas; Columbus, Ohio; Frederick, Maryland; Rochester, New York; and Sioux Falls, South Dakota. In addition to fostering friendships and publicizing DWU, the tea parties served as a fundraiser and membership drive, and in that purpose were a huge success; we raised about $2,000 and recruited many new DWU members!!

It's Official!

The DWU Board agreed in our January 2004 meeting that "A Saturday Tea" would become our signature annual event. We want this event to take place among Deaf women from all places, and in the process unite and strengthen Deaf women and make DWU more visible. We encourage Deaf women, small group or a DWU affiliate chapter, to host "a Saturday Tea in March" as a fundraiser.

It's simple and fun!
Any organization that would like to host "A Saturday Tea in March" can do so as long as it meets the following fun and simple criteria:

  • Tea Parties are encouraged to be hosted by DWU or DWU-affiliate members
  • Simply serve varied flavored tea. Variation represent Diversity of our DWU organization.

Purposes:

  • Fundraiser, the proceeds goes to Deaf Women United, both local and national, to help with the operation fee of the Board and the Affiliate Chapters. The more operable the Board and Chapters are, we will have more programs and services provided for Deaf Women.
  • Promoting DWU by informing women what DWU is all about!
  • Membership Drive, the more members we have, the stronger our organization will be!

It really is a fun and rewarding event, so why don't we all sign up online together and each host "A Saturday Tea in March" to celebrate Women's Herstory Month! Hopefully, even more cities around America will take up the challenge. If you are interested, please contact Jennifer "JAC" Cook, dwufundraising @ dwu.org
